Try Email Prioritizer from Office Labs

We understand that email overload is a challenge: today, many people get too much email and have a hard time keeping up with it. Not only do people receive a high volume of mail, the mail may arrive at inconvenient times. There are a lot of good ideas about how to help people with email overload and we’re testing a few of those ideas in Office Labs.

Our latest prototype, Email Prioritizer, includes these features:

  • A "Do Not Disturb" button that stops incoming mail delivery so you can work without interruptions.

  • Email priorities are assigned to incoming mail so you can focus on the most important mail first. With a “0-3 stars” ranking system, you can focus on email messages that are most important to you. These priorities are based on algorithms from Microsoft Research.

The prototype is an Outlook 2007 add-in and it’s available for immediate download. Try it and let us know what you think! Your feedback can help us determine if this is an effective method for improving your productivity.

Installer Error

Anyone seeing "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2869"?  I am trying to install on Vista SP1 box with Outlook 2007 (w/exchange backend).

Re: Try Email Prioritizer from Office Labs

Hi, Marissa

Thanks for your feedback. In the error dialog, there should be a "details" button, can you click that button and send us the text in the details? That'll help us to diagnose this problem.

Thanks
Tao from Email Prioritizer team

Re: Installer Error

I don't actually get a details link in the error dialog box. It simply states the installer message I stated earlier.

I did find the following event log error messages:
MESSAGE 1:

Error MsiInstaller 11001 None

The description for Event ID 11001 from source MsiInstaller cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Product: Email Prioritizer from Microsoft Office Labs -- Error 1001.
(NULL)
(NULL)
(NULL)
(NULL)

the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table.

MESSAGE 2:
Error MsiInstaller 10005 None
Product: Email Prioritizer from Microsoft Office Labs -- The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2869. The arguments are: ErrorDlg, ,

Have you seen any instances of this?

Thanks again!

Neat!  Now how about scheduling options?

Neat! Nice response to Google’s gag approach with its “Email Addict” feature. I had posted my own suggestions of how an email tool could help with email overload at http://knowledgeforward.wordpress.com/2008/06/08/google-lands-crushing-blow-to-email-addiction-with-new-feature/. It seems you hit on one of the features I listed: mail arrival schedules. I’d recommend adding schedule options (hourly, morning/noon/evening, etc) to the manual option you provide. This would simulate the cycle of the postman coming to deliver the mail, and leave your brain free outside those times to concentrate. I had a few more suggestions too you can check out.

By the way, describing the “do not disturb” as allowing you to “work without interruptions” is a bit of a misnomer. Unless you have toasts turned on email doesn’t interrupt you. And if that bothers you, the feature is already there to turn them off. I’d say email is a distraction or a temptation. The reason I’m picky is that there is a lot of great research around “interruption science” (for example, see interruptions.net) that mostly can’t help or apply to this situation.

Re: Installer Error

I am unable to uninstall Email Prioritizer or install Sticky Sorter.

I get the same error that Marissa receives.  The error is "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2869."

What can I do to resolve this?

"Why Priority"

I notice that emails I have printed since installing the Email Prioritizer have a header notation labeled "Why Priority."  Some numbers follow that label.  Is this meaningful?  I'm curious and wondering if the numbers could be useful.

cant see toolbar

Hi:
I installed this lab, but the tool bar does not appear and it doesn't appear to be installed and running.  Is this because of a conflict I might be having with the microsoft live meeting add in?

thanks,

Conflict with Blackberry Push email

Hi,

I tried this out, but found that when I had the 'do not disturb' switched on my email was still pushed to my Blackberry (I was expecting that) - but the disturbing thing was that when I turned off the do not disturb the emails never arrived in my Outlook inbox. Had to uninstall due to this issue.

Carlos

Prioritizer - More Advance way

There is any chance for auto Prioritizing by using the Key work from subject line of mail .
For an example
Keywork: Urgent, flag, Important, follow-up

A Few Quibbles

My view was changed to a two-column affair showing 1) the email size and 2) the category. Is this a feature of the Prioritizer? If so, there will be quite a relearning curve for me and others. I implicitly key off of senders' names for my prioritizing.

I will admit that, without seeing the sender or subject (except one at a time in the preview pane) it does compel me to approach my mail in a more organized fashion. But, and here's the big but, it also compels me to TRUST the program to correctly prioritize. I have nagging doubts about an important email languishing amid the zero-star category.

And now for a curiosity question: how in the world does the software determine my manager's name? Is that an unprogrammed feature as yet, or have you really figured out how to do that.

Not quite sold, but definitely intrigued. John V

How do you uninstall email prioritizer?

I might be as dumb as a bag of rocks this morning but after "playing" with it I need to go back to the old way of managing email and can't seem to figure out how to uninstall it. Any help?
Bob M. at 11/17/2009 7:32 AM

Got it. . . .

The dumbness wore off after I just embaressed myself. Control panel, add remove, looked closer and there it was. Sorry for the bother. Coffee time. . .
Bob M. at 11/17/2009 7:37 AM

After uninstalling the word "Priority" In every email.

Would have been nice if they said it would only work on an Exchange Server.  Any ideas on how to fix it.
