Controlling pptPlex using a 3D camera

Ever since I did the Nintendo Wii experiment a while back, I’ve been interested in exploring other new ways speakers can interact with their presentations. Ideally, the presenter would not need to hold any hardware and natural gestures would be used to navigate the presentation.

I recently learned that Microsoft Research was experimenting with 3D cameras, and I thought it was worth seeing if a 3D camera could be used to control a presentation. Check out this video for the results of my side project.

3D cameras are still in the prototype stage and are hard to come by, and until they become mainstream this was just an experiment.  However, it’s interesting to think about what the future may bring.

Suggestion Box

Why does Office Labs have no suggestion box?  I think there are TONS of people with great ideas that could really drive huge productivity improvements.  For example, I work in the financial sector where a large aspect of the job is inputting financial data into Excel from scanned electronic documents.  In addition to how time consuming this is, it also doesn't leave a great trail of where data came from.  I am positive that this could be automated in future versions of Excel, even if it required some simple Excel style programming (i.e. = certain function) and then intelligently flow the data into a spreadsheet with links to the original data.  That would be a productivity breakthrough and while I am sure this can be done with non-Microsoft software, it should be simple to do from Excel...plus finance firms would upgrade en-masse to take advantage of that type of functionality.

Good Idea, but we need do something more.

This is a good ideas for using 3D camera.
But, in this video, I can see the gestures stiil too wide range.
Maybe we need to research about some gesture language when we do presentation. Combining with gesture recognition technology, making our action in front of 3D camera can more humanity.

Have you tried this with Touchless

Touchless is in codeplex and attempts to use a normal webcam to control the mouse. http://www.codeplex.com/touchless
