pptPlex now supports PowerPoint 2010!

Today we posted an update to pptPlex that has two changes:  it now works with PowerPoint 2010 and supports multi-touch in Windows 7!

Even though we officially stopped working on pptPlex quite a while ago, you've probably noticed that we still play with it in our free time (for example, controlling presentations with a Wii controller and a 3D camera).  We noticed that pptPlex wasn't working with PowerPoint 2010, so we took some time to get it working with the latest version of PowerPoint.

Today’s update fixes a few compatibility bugs with PowerPoint 2010, but it also includes an important user experience change with regard to sections.

In PowerPoint 2007, there was no concept of sections, thus pptPlex added the concept.  In PowerPoint 2010, there is a concept of sections, thus pptPlex takes advantage of that concept.  What this means is that when you’re using pptPlex in PowerPoint 2010, to create, remove, or rename a section, you’ll need to use the PowerPoint user experience, not the pptPlex experience.  There will be no “Insert New Section” button in the pptPlex ribbon, and the section divider slides won’t be necessary.  Read more about sections in PowerPoint 2010.

Note that the above changes relate to PowerPoint 2010 only.  pptPlex in PowerPoint 2007 is not affected.

Multi-touch in Windows 7

The second major change in today's update is support for multi-touch in Windows 7.  If you are running Windows 7 on a computer that supports multi-touch, pptPlex will support several gestures when presenting, including:

                Pinch to zoom

Swipe to go to next/previous slide

                Tap to zoom

                Two-fingered tap to zoom out

For more information, see our prior blog post on this topic.

We hope you continue to use pptPlex in PowerPoint 2010!

Office 2010 x64?

Is this version works with Office 2010 x64?

Other projects?

Will you make also the other projects compatible with Office 2010 (including the 64-bit version)?

Am really keen on being able to use them again.

Also fixes a previous version bug-

The new version also corrects a problem in the last version that many of us have commented about here - that the section settings didn't work. Only one kind of section style was available, and the section colour sections did nothing. Happily, it's working great with this new version. Just in time, too - I have a big presentation on Thursday and it'll be handy.

Thanks!

PowerPoint? Tame the beast and it could provide a useful means of communication

PowerPoint has taken a lot of flak recently, especially from the US military, for its overuse at presentations and its failure to help communicate complex topics. Now for the good story from researcher Sarah Kaplan, of the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

In a recently published study, she decided to take a deeper look into how PowerPoint is mobilised in a company's strategy by doing an ethnographic study of one organisation.

pptplex error on new presentations

I have pptplex installed on two PCs running Win7 Ultimate x64 and Office 2010 Professional x64. It was was working fine on both. After installing a lot of software on one, including Visual Studio 2010 and several other products, pptplex fails when accessing the canvas background selection tool. The error is 'The callback function "backgroundGallery_GetSelectedItemID" on control "backgroundGallery" returned an invalid value'. I can edit and display existing pptplex presentations. Any clue as to how I track down what's causing this?
