Install Problems a Plenty

Created By: CindyC

Subject: Install Problems a Plenty

Body:

First, thanks so much for fixing the installer so that non-admins can install.

Unfortunately you did not take into consideration the full school\Lab environment. Since you are installing to the AppData\Local folder, and the user profile is wiped on log-off (I guess to save space) the machine is now left in a state that when the student re-logs on to the machine, they cannot un-install/repair/re-install Ribbon Hero, because the registry is pointing to the now deleted folders and freaks out saying the network resources are not available.

I am checking with the school to see if they have roaming profiles turned on. Or could stop whiping the profiles on those specific machines (but that is doubtful).

But is there a way to customize the install location, any hidden install flags (like to a thumbdrive or to the students network drive?) Is there reason you selected Local instead of Roam for the log files? And why are you installing the Dll's and executables into the local settings folder? If you were installing them in the program files directory some of this wouldn't be an issue, I don't think you have to be an admin to install files to the the program files directoy.

So anyway, we are now over the non-admin hurdle and smack in the middle of other nasty problems, which is too bad, this really is a great teaching tool. Looks like I will have to continue to have to wait before making this available to my students.

One thing that occasionally stumps me is what the next step is specifically looking for.

For example, on the Insert A Shape activity in Word, you:

1) Insert the Shape (a sun)

2) Change the color using a Shape Style

3) Change the Drop-Shadow to lower-right

It took me a bit to notice that the difference between #2 and #3 was the drop shadow, as it's very subtle.

I think something useful would be for it to say, after you complete Step #1 and #2, something like "Now adjust the color like you see in the example" and "Now change the drop shadow like you see in the example".

Otherwise it might just frustrate people trying to figure out what the simulator wants.

Just posting that I'm having the same problem too, on my laptop set at 1440 x 900.

I'm getting it's because of the aspect ratio, not the resolution. The wider the display, the more you lose on the vertical.

A scroll bar would be a temporary fix.

Body:
Word freezes when I try to answer the Header and Cover Page challenge. After I insert the cover page it becomes un-responsive. I could not even exit using the Task Manager; I had to restart the computer. Any comment or suggestion? I thing it might be a Word Options set-up that is the way of the the Ribbon Hero application.
